Their day was full of laughter, connection, and joyful celebrations, and we loved capturing every moment for them. As if the day couldn’t get any more magical, it was capped with the reddest, most otherworldly sunset we have ever had the fortune to witness. Autumn Weddings and Golden Light
We absolutely love autumn weddings because they give us the most beautiful, golden light to work with. It’s always a joy when a couple books us to capture their autumn celebration. Joanna and Steven are such a wonderful couple, and they planned a truly perfect day at this stunning Yorkshire wedding venue. It was our first time at the Yorkshire Wedding Barn, and we can’t wait to return.
Photographing the Most Incredible Sunset
Of course, nothing could have prepared us for the sunset that evening. It was the reddest, most otherworldly sky we’ve ever witnessed — honestly, it looked almost like the apocalypse! Earlier in the day, we had already captured some golden-hour shots, but as the speeches were drawing to a close, the sky began to glow in an unbelievable shade of red.
We immediately pointed it out to Joanna and Steven, and they ran up a nearby hill while we photographed from below. These were completely unposed shots — our couples simply being themselves. And for Joanna and Steven, being themselves meant heroically running up a hill with that spectacular sunset unfolding behind them. It was one of those moments that perfectly embodies why we love Yorkshire barn wedding photography: natural, joyful, and unforgettable.

Capturing Emotion at the Yorkshire Barn
The whole day was simply perfect. The morning was full of tender, emotional moments, with so many happy tears as friends and family prepared for the celebration ahead. The ceremony was equally moving, with groom Steven overcome with emotion throughout, and it was impossible not to feel the love in the room. Days like this remind us why we love our job so much — capturing weddings that are beautiful, emotional, and utterly unforgettable.
Capturing the Day Naturally at the Yorkshire Barn
We were thrilled that Joanna and Steven loved their photographs and films. They shared their thoughts in a Brides Up North feature: “We had a package of two photographers and a videographer from The Mateers wedding photography. We both wanted a relaxed style of photography where the day was captured as it naturally happened without many posed photos. The photographer was probably the most difficult thing to find and we scoured the internet trying to find the right style for us, but we couldn’t have been happier with our choice. We genuinely didn’t notice the photographers around throughout the day and the photos were exactly what we were hoping for.”
