It was so lovely to meet so many wonderful couples at the Woolas Barn Wedding Fair in February. We heard about so many amazing wedding plans, and it was great chatting about how we can help capture your special day. Thank you to everyone who took the time to say hello.

Woolas Barn is such a beautiful venue, and seeing it filled with so much excitement, creativity, and anticipation was truly inspiring. Every wedding we photograph there is fantastic, and the Open Day gave a real flavour of what the venue is like when it is busy and full of life.

We also love how hands-on the owners are and it’s been great getting to know them over the years. Fiona and James are so lovely, as is their family. They all get involved and take the time to really get to know their couples – and the suppliers, too. You can tell how much they care about what they do as venue owners, and we think that shines through in every part of Woolas Barn.

Four-time winners UK Photographer Of The Year
We are a married couple (that’s us below, presenting to a room full of French photographers at the Rise Up conference in Chamonix) and have been fortunate to win many awards for our wedding photography. These awards have brought us international recognition, and we are now invited, as educators, mentors, and experts, to present at photography conferences all over the UK and Europe. It feels both surreal and humbling for two photographers from East Yorkshire, and at the same time, it makes us very proud. Last year, we travelled to France, Belgium, and Romania to share our work, and this year we are heading to Italy to present at a workshop, as well as speaking at conferences across the UK.

Beyond our work as educators, what we truly love is photographing weddings, and for this, we have been fortunate to receive numerous awards. Nationally, we have been named UK Photographer of the Year by TWIA, Masters of Wedding Photography, and This Is Reportage twice, making us four-time winners of the UK Wedding Photographer of the Year award. Most recently, Hollie was ranked the Top UK Wedding Photojournalist by the WPJA. Internationally, we have been recognised as double International Wedding Photographer of the Year winners.
Some of our national and international awards are collected below. Choosing us to photograph your day means choosing one of the most awarded wedding photographers, not just locally, not just in the UK, but internationally.

Why we love Woolas Barn
We’ve had the privilege of photographing a number of incredible weddings at Woolas Barn, and we already have more to look forward to, with six more bookings across 2026 and 2027. It’s a venue we truly love. Its rustic charm, stunning countryside views, and warm, inviting atmosphere make it a dream setting for capturing unforgettable moments. Every wedding here is unique, and we’d be thrilled to return and photograph your special day. If you choose Woolas Barn as your venue, you’ll have picked an incredible location for your wedding, run by a lovely family with a team dedicated to making sure your day is the very best it can be.

Wedding photography is an investment
We believe wedding photography is one of the most important investments you can make for your big day because the memories it captures last a lifetime. While the cake is eaten, the flowers fade, and the decorations are packed away, your wedding photographs remain a tangible reminder of the emotions, connections, and beauty of the day. So we recommend investing in the very best wedding photography you can. By choosing us, The Mateers—award-winning wedding photographers—you’re ensuring that every moment is captured with artistry and authenticity. We take real pride in creating images that will tell the real and authentic story of your day. Here’s a behind the scenes shot of Hollie photographing a beautiful local wedding.

Frequently asked questions
Have you shot at our venue before?
We travel all around the world with our work, and we feel very lucky to say that. Last year, we were in Athens one weekend, London the next, the Lake District afterwards, and then back to Yorkshire before heading off to Cyprus. This year, we’re off to Italy, France, and all around the UK. We visit new venues all the time, and we love it. If we haven’t been to your venue before, we’ll be excited to see it for the first time. And if it’s a venue we know and love, we can’t wait to return!

We love your natural style, but do you shoot group shots?
Yes! People book us for our documentary photography – it’s something we do like no other photographer and that’s why we’ve won the biggest awards in world wedding photography for what we do. However, most couples still want a few group shots too and that’s absolutely fine – it’s your day and we want you to be happy, that is the single most important thing to us. We promise though that group shots will never take over your day. 99% of our work is completely natural – beautiful, funny and emotional moments happen at every wedding without the need to stage things. Group shots are completely optional to you, too – if you don’t want any, you don’t have to have any. If you do, we’ll happily take them for you. The whole process of working with us is completely relaxed and it enables you to get on with you having the best day ever and allows us to get on with doing what we do best: capturing so many moments for you.

Are you insured, do you have back up equipment and do we get a contract?
We’ve been photographing weddings together for nearly 10 years, and we take care of every part of the process from the photos we capture to the support we give before, during, and after your big day. Insurance, back up equipment and a contract are just the start. The real magic comes in the images we create and the happiness you feel when you see your final gallery. Making sure you love your images is what really matters to us so we put so much care into documenting your day. We love what we do, and we’re proud of the service we give every couple. But don’t just take our word for it—check out over 150 Google reviews to hear directly from the couples we’ve worked with.

Do you take couple shots?
Yes! We keep our couple shots relaxed — this isn’t a stiff portrait session, and there are no cheesy poses. You can see some examples of our couple shots on this page. Most couples want some moments captured of just the two of them together, and we love taking them. Just like group shots, couple shots won’t take over your day. There’s no dragging you away from your party for hours. A relaxed walk around your venue is all we need to capture some beautiful, natural moments of you together.

Some more of our award winning wedding photography
We’ll leave you with a little more of our award-winning wedding photography, captured at weddings across the UK and abroad. We like to think our wedding photography stands out as a little different. We are drawn to the in-between moments just as much as the big ones. We capture things as they naturally unfold, creating images that feel artistic but honest, and that reflect the true atmosphere of your day. Our photographs show people for who they really are, not a version of themselves that feels posed or forced. The moments we capture are all about you, but also, your guests too.

To us, a wedding day is full of humour, emotion, quiet moments, chaos, connection, and everything in between. So we photograph it all. The tender, beautiful moments you will treasure, and the unexpected moments that might have passed in a blur. The nervous excitement, the tears, the laughter, the wild dancefloor, and the tiny details you did not even realise were happening. A beautiful walks in the hills – or the bride falling off a space hopper.

So, whether you are planning the most intimate wedding or the biggest party, whether moments at your wedding include sunset couple portraits or your 80 year old mum riding a bucking bronco, your day will be completely unique. There is no “right” way for a wedding to look, only your way, and that is what we are there to document. Whatever your plans, we would love to photograph it for you. Hollie & Patrick, The Mateers (4 time winners the UK Wedding Photographer Of The Year award).
