Featuring guest speakers Lyndsey Goddard and Rob Ball
As of December 2025, this event is now sold out. We’re very excited to be welcoming 20 photographers from across the UK and Europe to London in March 2026 for a full day of learning on documentary wedding photography. If you’d like to register your interest in our next event, please drop us a message.
We’re thrilled to announce our latest workshop, Wedding Photography Is Art by The Mateers. Join us, Hollie and Patrick, in London on 5th March 2026 for a collaborative and interactive day of education. We’ll be exploring both the technical and creative processes that shape our photographic art, as well as insights into running a successful and authentic documentary photography business in the age of the algorithm. This will be our third in-person workshop (following two previous sell-out events) and we can’t wait to share an inspiring day with a new group of fellow photographers. This workshop is sponsored by our friends at Digitalab – the fantastic album and print suppliers.

Our awards and accolades
That’s us above! Awards have always been important to us, not as an end goal but as recognition of the work we love to create. We feel incredibly fortunate to have received many of the major accolades in our industry, listed below:

- Hollie is also the only photographer to have won both the This Is Reportage Wedding and This Is Reportage Family Photographer of the Year awards
- Hollie was named a Rangefinder Magazine Rising Star of Wedding Photography in 2023
- Hollie is a previous winner of the This Is Reportage UK Storyteller of the Year award
- Hollie won two International Wedding Photographer of the Year (IWPOTY) categories in 2024

Two incredible guest speakers
Along with sharing our own expertise, we are honoured to welcome two exceptional guest speakers, each acclaimed in their own field. Alongside our workshop programme, they will join us to share their expertise, insights, and unique perspectives. So, without further ado, we are delighted to introduce…
Lyndsey Goddard – the iconic documentary wedding photographer in her first ever public speaking appearance at a wedding photography event

We’re beyond excited to welcome Lyndsey Goddard, the iconic documentary wedding photographer, to our London workshop. This will be her first ever public speaking appearance at a wedding photography event. Lyndsey photographed her first wedding back in 2003, all on slide film and cross-processed (“the photos looked like an acid trip,” she says) and launched her business in 2009. Since then, she has documented over 500 weddings and earned a reputation as one of the most respected and authentic voices in documentary wedding photography. And when we say iconic, we really mean it. Ask many in the business who their favourite documentary wedding photographer is, and the answer will often be Lyndsey. We feel incredibly honoured that she has accepted our invitation to join us at Wedding Photography Is Art London.

True to her unobtrusive, observational, and hands-off approach, Lyndsey has always photographed in a way that feels honest and free. She attracts creative, diverse couples who value authenticity over trends, building a career rooted in genuine storytelling and shooting for herself and her couples, not for algorithms. Along the way, she has amassed an extraordinary list of accolades, including 14 Fearless Awards, 31 This is Reportage Awards, 45 Masters of Wedding Photography Awards, 11 PKIR Awards, 23 ISPWP Awards, and 158 WPJA Awards, more than any other UK photographer in the UK.

Lyndsey was the winner of one of the most prestigious awards in our industry, the TWIA UK Photographer of the Year, in 2017, and has since served as a judge for the past five years. She was also named Masters of Wedding Photography UK Photographer of the Year in 2022, a This is Reportage Top 100 photographer in 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2024, and UK Top Photojournalist for WPJA in 2016 and 2019.

Lyndsey has always been a true inspiration to us, and we couldn’t be more thrilled that she will be sharing her insight and creative vision with us in London. This is a rare – in fact, unique – opportunity to learn from one of the foremost figures in contemporary documentary wedding photography.

Rob Ball – the Award-winning British art photographer who traces Britain’s cultural and coastal landscapes from Blackpool to Benidorm
We are delighted to welcome Rob Ball to our London wedding photography workshop. We invited Rob, an art photographer whose work thoughtfully examines place, to give a fresh perspective to you. As a non-wedding photographer, he brings a way of seeing that is not bound by convention, encouraging us to notice composition, light, and narrative in new and unexpected ways. Engaging with his approach helps us understand how to tell stories visually with subtlety, patience, and depth, skills that translate beautifully to documenting weddings. Rob’s art-books sit proudly on our own bookshelf, and we are truly honoured to have him join us at Wedding Photography Is Art London.

Rob Ball is an award-winning British photographer and Reader in Photography at Canterbury Christ Church University. Over the past fifteen years he has documented coastal resorts across Britain and beyond, exploring the evolving identities, architecture and communities of these environments through seasonal rhythms and socioeconomic change. His photobooks include Dreamlands, Coney Island, Silent Coast and Benidorm, and his work is held in distinguished collections such as the National Portrait Gallery, the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Martin Parr Foundation.

Rob’s photographs have been exhibited at The Photographers’ Gallery, Turner Contemporary and the Design Museum. Based in Whitstable, Kent, Ball also directs SEAS Photography, a platform dedicated to exploring seaside environments.

Rob’s presence at the workshop offers a rare opportunity to gain insight from a photographer whose work balances documentary precision with artistic inquiry, broadening the way we see and interpret the world. We are thrilled to welcome Rob to our Wedding Photography Is Art workshop and are certain that his perspective will be one of the highlights of the day.

Four educators, one day: between the four of us, we’ll be sharing our expertise, creative insights, and individual approaches to help you expand the way you see and capture weddings. Lyndsey Goddard will be talking through, with us, a selection of her best-known work, offering a rare glimpse into the storytelling and moments that have defined her acclaimed career. Rob Ball will deliver a 30-minute talk on his art photography practice, providing a fresh perspective on observation, place, and composition beyond the wedding genre.

The Mateers – documentary wedding photographers & educators
And then there’s us, the Mateers. We’ll explore the connections between people, place, and narrative, showing you how to look beyond the obvious, slow down, and create images that feel honest, layered, and full of meaning. By the end of the day, you will have a toolkit of approaches, techniques, and inspiration to elevate your own photography and expand the way you tell stories through your lens. A central part of the workshop is our ‘storybuilding’ content, where we will guide you in detail through how to shoot, edit, and curate images that convey real emotion and meaningful narratives, creating work that resonates long after the moment has passed.

Wedding Photography Is Art is designed for all photographers: no matter your style or approach to wedding photography, we’re all documenting moments. In today’s digital age, where algorithms and artificial intelligence are seemingly helping to shape the future, we believe documentary photography – capturing authentic, real moments – is more important than ever. So, this workshop is for everyone: whether you’re an experienced photographer, an aspiring professional just starting out, or somewhere in between. Whatever the style of photography you specialise in, we believe the topics we will cover will resonate with you.

It’s about more than awards: We’re all multi award winning photographers (including: 2 TWIA POTYs, 3 TIWA Regional awards, 2 TIR POTYs, 1 TIR FAMILY POTY, 2 Masters POTYs, 2 IWPOTYs, 4 WPJA UK Photojournalist Of The Year, 1 PKIR POTY and 1 RF Rising Stars). Though we’ll certainly touch on awards throughout the workshop, Wedding Photography Is Art is about much more than accolades. It’s about embracing documentary photography as an art form and navigating the challenges of being both a photographer and a business owner. We’ll explore why we believe capturing genuine moments with authenticity is at the core of what makes wedding photography so powerful. Now, more than ever.

Crafting a meaningful narrative – ‘storybuilding’ is a popular and rewarding section of our workshop, dedicated to the art of storytelling in your photography. Whether it’s This Is Reportage Story Awards, social media, blogs, or client galleries, storytelling lies at the heart of everything we do as photographers. We’ll walk you through how we create impactful, engaging stories that resonate across diverse media platforms, and demonstrate how a carefully crafted narrative can elevate every wedding you capture. Having seen firsthand how transformative this approach can be through mentoring individual photographers, we’re excited to bring this to a group setting. You can see us above, presenting our previous – sold out – Wedding Photography Is Art workshop in Manchester.

Don’t be an imposter, be yourself: this is the ethos behind ‘wedding photography is art’. We’ll discuss how the day we realised this was the day we began to create the work we’re known for today. We’ll explain that we don’t compare ourselves to others and don’t follow trends. We’ll show how we create authentic work that stands out from the crowd and resonates for our clientele. Work that speaks about us as artists and people (above is Hollie on stage, delivering this very message to the Ninedots Gathering 2024 crowd – below, we’re both presenting at Fearless and Masters conference in Antwerp, Belgium).

Programme for the day
- Storybuilding – unique to our workshop. Let us help you elevate your storytelling and create more powerful, connected narratives.
- Simplifying the approach – we’ll discuss how we photograph each stage of a wedding day and explain how we maximise our creativity by keeping our approach simple.
- Our artistic style – how we create images that stand out from the crowd, both in camera and through editing. We’ll discuss why we believe what we do is ‘art’.
- Composition is the key – why we believe that composition is the key element to every image we take.
- Ripping up the rule book – how we stopped following conventions and forged our own path in wedding photography.
- Framing and cropping – how we use subtle and dynamic crops to enhance our raw images.
- Thinking ahead – how we think ahead and anticipate moments before they happen – being in the right place at the right time to capture the unexpected.
- No down time – there’s always something to capture! We’ll show you how we stay creative during the quieter periods of the day.
- Awards – we are lucky to have been successful in many awards and have become experienced photography award judges. We’ll talk about how to win awards to help with your marketing and branding. Which awards to enter and how different photography styles are better suited for certain awards. Tips on This Is Reportage individual and story awards, Masters awards, Fearless awards, PKIR awards. We’ll also cover how winning awards has challenged us to develop ourselves creatively.
- Branding – awards aren’t for everyone and branding is much more than winning an award. We’ll explain how we’ve developed our own unique brand of documentary wedding photography.
- Working as a duo and shooting solo – we’ll discuss how we work together and sometimes, shoot weddings on our own.
- Finding our clientele – how we find our ideal clients.
- Our equipment – the cameras, the lenses, the flash equipment – everything we use on a wedding day.
- Family photography – Hollie – the 2024 This Is Reportage Family Photographer Of The Year – will outline how she has diversified her creative and business practice and how she successfully combines shooting family photography with our established wedding output.
- Technical and creative analysis – how we created some of our best known images and why they have ‘impact’.
- Community is vital – how being part of our wider photography community has helped us develop as people and artists. We are looking forward to widening our own personal community through Wedding Photography Is Art.
- Our guest speakers – of course, our guest speakers, too!
- Invite to our private Facebook group – an exclusive group for mentees and workshop attendees.

Kind words: We love working with photographers to help them develop their craft, refine their approach, and, above all, feel empowered to reach their full potential. That’s exactly what our motto Don’t Be an Imposter, Be Yourself is all about. Below are some kind words from photographers we’ve worked with, whether through one-to-one mentoring or through them attending our workshops.
“The best investment I made last year“. Robin Goodlad (Robin Goodlad Photography).
“Thank you so much for running the workshop last week. It was everything I’ve been looking for to help me to get to the next step in my career, and more than that, it was a calm, friendly environment that felt so comfortable. I could have stayed for hours more” Caroline Goosey (Caroline Goosey Photography).
“Thanks again for organising this workshop. It was great for us to have a chance to meet with you. We’ve loved your images for so long, and we have not been disappointed with your personalities. The guests you brought were also photographers we admire a lot and enjoyed meeting in person. The attendees were all such nice people as well. It felt great to be around so many people who are into true documentary photography. So really it was the perfect event for us, totally worth travelling for. Thanks for taking the time to go through the gallery we sent during the workshop! We love receiving and giving critical feedback but it’s not easy to find people to do this with. Thanks again” Xavier and Elvirie (Duo Azul Photography).
“I attended The Mateers’ workshop in Manchester in 2024. Hollie and Patrick have so much knowledge to share, and their humble nature and down-to-earth teaching style makes learning from them an absolute joy. They are not only incredibly talented documentary photographers, but also genuinely kind and wonderful people. Understanding their approach to wedding photography has significantly influenced my own work, and so I’ll always be grateful to the Mateers for their guidance and support. If you want to learn from the best in the business, I highly recommend attending one of their workshops.“ Jenna Kathleen (Jenna Kathleen Photographer).
“I cannot recommend the ‘Wedding Photography Is Art’ workshop highly enough! As a documentary wedding photographer I was already a fan of their work, Hollie and Patrick are right at the top of the game and their work is hugely inspirational. To get a full day discussing how they make this work was a privilege and has been a huge help for me developing and improving my own work. We went through such topics as how they approach each part of a wedding, what they’re looking for, how they shoot in both a technical and philosophical sense, how they edit and how they approach entering images for awards. Hollie and Patrick are not just talented photographers but skilful educators, breaking the content down really nicely and leaving me with lots to consider and apply in my own working practice. It also helps that they’re lovely! The Mateers are really warm and approachable and keen to develop the community around documentary wedding photography. As well as being really informative and inspiring, I got to connect with other like-minded documentary wedding photographers. I’ve also joined their ‘Wedding Photography Is Art’ Facebook group which is an excellent resource for sharing work for constructive criticism, seeking advice and championing photographers. If you take this workshop you will not be disappointed!” Marc Gartland (Marc Gartland Photography).
“WOW! After being a fan of Hollie & Patrick (The Mateers) work for a long time I attended their workshop in 2024 and I was blown away. Not only by their photos but the way they share their knowledge and explain things in an easy understandable way. Having been a wedding photographer myself for over 10 years, Hollie & Patrick didn’t disappoint and I left with loads of tips and enthusiasm for my next weddings. Seeing how they work, approach weddings and storytelling was inspiring. I also had some 1-2-1 mentoring with Holiie and Patrick who spent the time going through some of my recent award entries and they were amazing with their critique and advice. I have taken the advice in to future weddings and already feel better about the way I approach and photograph weddings. Not only was the advice practical for future shooting, I even won a story award with a previously failed attempt after some tweaking on the mentoring call, amazing! I would highly recommend any of Hollie & Patrick’s education and workshops for any photographer.“ Scott Carney (Scott Carney Photography and owner of Photographers Keeping It Real).
“I really enjoyed the day. It was great to understand both of your approaches and I really enjoyed how you see things. It was great to get a mix of speakers with similar styles but slightly different approaches as well. Overall it was really well balanced. The story building exercise with the cards was great fun and interesting to do it with other people. Seeing everyone’s story and your take on the selection and improvement of individual images was so so good. I think everyone was able to take something away from that even if it wasn’t their work. I’ve not seen a live edit of stories or others work at any other events so it was good to see. Your playful fun compositions are really what sets you apart as incredible documentary photographers so it was enjoyable to see a wider body of that work from you both. “Stepping back to see the bigger picture” was a great nugget to take away. I’m very quick to move to the situation to ensure I capture something and sometimes miss that more interesting story or foreground inclusion by not stepping back. There were so many other little nuggets like that which stuck with me for my wedding at the weekend and I could see in my work already so thank you. I’ll keep an eye out for any more days you do. In fact, I was saying just today that it was the best workshop I’ve ever been to“ Ben Lee (Ben Lee Photography).
“If anyone is looking for a documentary wedding photography workshop, we can’t recommend this highly enough! We joined the previous workshop that Hollie and Patrick put on in Manchester – it was such a great experience! They’re both such an inspiration to us and lovely people too. We learned a lot and I must admit – I’m tempted to go again!” Karolina from Blue Bell Studios.
“I had the absolute pleasure of attending a workshop with Hollie and Patrick Mateer and honestly, it was brilliant. They’re not just incredibly talented photographers, they’re also amazing at sharing their knowledge in a way that’s clear, inspiring, and easy to understand. One of the biggest takeaways for me was their approach to wedding photography as an art form. The Mateers showed how the documentary style isn’t just about capturing moments, it’s about doing so in a really clever, creative, and thoughtful way to tell a couple’s story beautifully. Their passion for what they do is infectious, and I left the workshop full of ideas and excitement for my own wedding work. If you ever get the chance to learn from them, do it, you won’t regret it!” Martyn Hand (Martyn Hand Photography).
“Being mentored by Patrick and Hollie was a no brainer. The amount of detail in their critiques was amazing. They were honest, straightforward and full of fantastic suggestions and ideas. Taking their advice and reworking some images I even went on to pick up several new awards. If you’re thinking of investing in photography education or training, you really cannot go wrong with Hollie and Patrick”. Alex Benyon (Alex Benyon Photography).
“Both Hollie and Patrick are great photographers – and lovely people. Through their feedback and guidance I managed to win my first ever This Is Reportage and Fearless awards. I have since continued winning awards, which I know is down to their guidance – and I use the advice they’ve given me at every wedding I photograph”. Barnaby Staniland (BGS Weddings).
“Thank you once again for your wisdom, advice and guidance with the mentoring sessions we’ve had. I’m already feeling the difference at weddings, but also during editing, too. Your work, energy and mentoring has really really helped guide me a lot”. Lewis Fackrell (Lewis Fackrell Photography).
“The unique documentary approach of The Mateers is inspiring. I met Patrick after his talk at the Gathering conference in 2022. After a few beers, a late night McDonalds and plenty of photography chat I asked him about possibly mentoring me to improve my documentary. Watching Patrick meticulously go through each galley was fascinating. His attention to detail, eye for a moment and story telling-ability is incredible. A year on and I have his voice in the back of my head at every wedding. Get closer – is this a moment? Crop harder, how do you want to tell the story? And in the edit – more cropping. I won my first This Is Reportage story award at the start of 2024 and a really important single award in 2023. Both the story and single award came from the mentoring. Don’t walk, run to get yourself booked on their workshop. You will take away so much. I’m a much stronger storytelling photographer thanks to The Mateers”. Paul Williams (Ginger Beard Wedding Photography).
“Honestly, wow, what an amazing day and what lovely people! Really premier league talent and experience in the room from all sides. Just going through my notes again. Having spent many hours (certainly measureable in days) reading, listening to podcasts, youtube tutorials and practicing. So many ideas and approaches from this workshop, it’s easily the best investment in learning to date. Really great to see and understand your process. The day itself was truly like an epiphany salad! Excited to put some of this into practice! Thanks to you both. I wasn’t made to feel like an imposter by anyone, such a nice group. Also really appreciate the feedback on the “story”. Just doing it made me think differently, not executed as well as it might have been but it’s a shift in approach I need, some things I’ll be doing from now on at every event.” Christopher Morgan (Chris Morgan Photography).
“The workshop was great. I think any opportunity I can get to sit in a room and not only be inspired but learn and connect with other like-minded creatives is hugely beneficial to me. I know I came in from the family side, and more of a videographer, but there was plenty to take away from the workshop to carry over to any genre, photo or video. The addition of guest speakers was great too, I loved their insights too.” Charlene McNabb (Love Gets Sweeter Videography).
“It was an awesome workshop, particularly with the inclusion of two other fantastic, but still different Documentary Wedding Photographers. Patrick and Hollie were both candid and informative with their approach, and I have noted several things I hope to implement in my own business. As a fellow wedding photography educator, I can say without question that their workshop was slick and offers great value for money. Thank you!” Rafe Abrook (Rafe Abrook Photography).
“I wouldn’t have even dared to take this image before I began working with you“. our mentee Hannah Brooke, on winning her first ever This Is Reportage award (Hannah Brooke Photography).
“I left the Wedding Photography Is Art workshop with many pages of notes and ideas that have genuinely pushed my wedding photography forward. Hollie and Patrick are brilliant photographers, but they’re also genuinely passionate about sharing what they’ve learned and helping others. They break down everything, including how they shoot a wedding, mindset, editing, curating images for blog posts, social media, entering awards, and so much more. The support doesn’t stop when the workshop ends either. Their Facebook group is one of the most helpful photography communities I’ve been part of, and it’s a great place to get feedback and advice from Hollie, Patrick, and other photographers. I’d definitely recommend this workshop to any wedding photographer wanting to strengthen their documentary work.” Darron Watson Photography (Darron Watson Photography).
“I turned my hand to wedding photography only in recent years, and have been influenced by the Mateers’ work (and those of their guest speakers) since I first started. Their creative approach to storytelling is why I was so excited to attend the workshop. The day was split up well into manageable sections and each speaker contributed an abundance of ideas and thought provoking techniques that gave me plenty to think about, practice and use throughout a busy wedding day. There were many penny-drop moments throughout that will stick with me and it was reassuring to discover that (as a self taught photographer) I was doing things similarly to these incredible speakers in aspects of my work. As well as the busy workshop day, it was great to meet new photographers who I’m still in contact with and whose work is also brilliant and unique in their own way. In addition to everything I learnt on the day, I’m really enjoying and benefiting from being a member of the private facebook group where images are shared for critique, most notably the Crop Shop, where Hollie and Patrick’s tweaks to crops and edits of member’s work is interesting and valuable. I’d like to submit work in the future into awards and I feel that this group is helping to build my understanding of what makes an award winning image and what is required from an image to stand out and tell a story with meaning. I’m very pleased that I booked onto the Wedding Photography Is Art workshop, and will book onto another one when I’m ready for another big push in the right direction!” Alistair Mac (Alistair Mac Photography).
“Before I booked onto Wedding Photography Is Art, I looked at many other workshops but felt they were too generic or all a bit ‘samey’ and aimed at the beginner. I wanted a workshop that delved deeper into documentary photography. Key takeaways included: use of wide angle lenses to capture a scene, use of layers within scenes to integrate complex scenes – ‘more going on within a photograph’, capturing more within a wedding day, e.g. eating, smoking, vaping, and working on the composition of photos. I also really liked the varied scenarios and approaches shown. And lastly, I also enjoyed looking at your street photography books that were brought along. The workshop was excellent.“ River Xavier (River Xavier Photography).
“I’ve been a fan of Hollie and Patrick for years. Their wedding photography is so unique and interesting that when I found out they were running a workshop, I knew it would be an incredible chance to learn from the BEST. I attended the Mateers Workshop in Leeds and I absolutely loved everything about the day. What Hollie and Patrick do so well is explain the thinking behind their creative decisions. From how they manage clients, to how they shoot, to how they crop, you get a full understanding of them and their photography. The Mateers are so open about how they approach weddings, breaking down the steps they take to create their unique images. They talk you through how they craft their wedding stories with such clarity and are incredibly encouraging about being creative on a wedding day. They also take the time to review the work of the attendees, showing how they might approach or shoot an image differently. This pulls everyone into the workshop and makes it feel collaborative rather than just being talked at. Their passion is contagious and you can’t help but leave feeling excited to get back out there and shoot. The guest speakers were also fantastic, adding real value without pulling focus away from Hollie and Patrick. Each offered a mini deep-dive into a topic they excel in, bringing something fresh to the day. As much as I love workshops run solo by one photographer, the Mateers format kept me fully engaged from start to finish. I would absolutely highly recommend!“ Erica Hawkins (Erica Hawkins Photography).
“Honestly, this workshop was hands down the best thing I did for my business this year. The whole day was super inspiring, the kind of day that just fills your creative cup right up! Learning about storytelling from two of the absolute best in the biz was incredible, and then having two awesome guest speakers on top of that? Total icing on the cake. I left with my head bursting with ideas, totally buzzing and itching to level up my storytelling game. And the best part? It even led to mentoring that has genuinely helped me improve so much already. If you’re a wedding photographer wanting to grow, get inspired, and have a really good time doing it, this workshop is an absolute winner.“ Kirsty Rockett (Kirsty Rockett Photography).
“I’ve been shooting weddings for about 20 years and regularly attend workshops but this one is different. The Mateers make you rethink every single shot, not just the award winning masterpieces but everything in between. It’s about bringing a flow to the full set of wedding images, about finding your own style and not just following the “safe shot”. I wish I had of had this 20 years ago when I was starting out!” Paul Doherty (Paul Doherty Photography And Video).
