Hollie Mateer – wedding photographer for M and G Wedding Photography

May 14, 2020

Hi I’m Hollie Mateer, I’m a lead wedding photographer for M and G Wedding Photography. That’s me above (the image was taken by my husband Patrick Mateer!) Below you will find a selection of my favourite images from weddings I have photographed. I hope you like looking through them. Please feel free to leave a comment at bottom of this page. After the images you can learn a little about me and why I love being a wedding photographer.

Photographing all over the UK

I live in the East Yorkshire village of Cottingham with my husband Patrick Mateer. Our 19 month old son Harrison certainly keeps us on our toes, as does Patrick’s son Xavier, who is 6. Xavi and Harrison are the best of friends! I love being a mum and step mum more than anything. Whilst on this little break from photographing weddings – I am writing this during the time of Coronavirus – we are currently redecorating our 1930s home. Though I live in Yorkshire I work all over the UK regularly travelling from one end of the country to the other.

Over 150 weddings photographed

I started photographing weddings in 2016. It had always been an aspiration of mine to photograph weddings. I love everything about weddings. The people, the dress, the emotions, the decor and the flowers. Before I started working with Patrick I was training to be a florist in Beverley, so I was already working within the wedding industry. However from my first wedding assisting (my then boyfriend) Patrick I was hooked!

I fell in love with wedding photography quickly

Wedding photography has become a real passion of mine. Within 6 months of photographing my first wedding, I was working full time as a photographer. Fast forward four years and I’ve shot around 150 weddings (while taking some time off to have a baby in between!) I photograph weddings with Patrick and on my own too. I have won lots of awards for individual images. These include winning multiple This Is Reportage awards. These awards are considered to be amongst the very hardest to win in the industry. I was named The Best Wedding Photographer in Yorkshire and the North East for 2020. Also one of the Top 10 Wedding Photographers by Photographers Keeping It Real (an international competition).

My family inspires me

My family are my inspiration: Patrick, Harrison and Xavier. When I’m not photographing weddings I’m photographing my family.

I love street photography

Henri Cartier Bresson, Joel Meyorwitz and Robert Frank to name just three amazing street photographers. The ethos and style of street photography has been very influential in my work. Taking candid, unposed photographs of a scene. Looking beyond one figure and beyond one moment. This is what informs my story telling style of wedding photography.

Wedding photography is a community

I am a part of This Is Reportage, a fabulous online community. We love it as it brings together the best documentary wedding photographers in the world. I am also a member of NineDots. Like This Is Reportage, NineDots is an online community full of amazingly talented photographers. It is a wonderful place for sharing ideas and supporting other wedding photographers. Wedding photography is such a competitive business. But also such a supportive one.

I love being creative

I absolutely love what I do. Photographing weddings is more than just a job, it’s my passion. There is so much love on a wedding day and it comes in all forms. Hugs, laughs, smiles and tears. Just being surrounded by happy people having the very best day ever. There’s never any need to pose or stage things. Beautiful moments, funny moments and emotional moments – they all just happen naturally. So I can concentrate on taking the best photographs of the best parts of every wedding I attend. Also I really love working with my husband! We both feel very privileged to work together in such a fun and creative job.

Favourite moment at a wedding

It’s hard to pick out just one moment as a favourite. The way I photograph is to capture 100s of images each telling individual stories. I love it when unexpected things happen – like the image below! – and that’s what I’m always looking out for.

Natural and unposed photography

I photograph weddings in a really relaxed and unposed way. Day to day I can be quite quiet. So being stealthy on a wedding day really works for me! Shooting weddings this way means that I capture every moment as it happens without interfering or influencing you or your wedding guests.

I love weddings so much I got married twice (to the same person!)

Patrick and I got married in 2018 at a registry office with just our parents and my step son Xavier. It was a really special day. But we saved our real wedding celebrations for the following year. With an outdoor humanist ceremony and all our family and friends there to celebrate with us it was perfect. Having now had our own wedding day, Patrick and I can really empathise with our couples even more than before. We know how hectic and fast a wedding day can feel in places. But we also know how much fun and how excitement planning a wedding is. Then the day itself is something to remember forever! So we feel even more intone with our couples than ever. We also know how valuable it is to capture as many moments as possible. It’s the photographs that help keep memories of your wedding day alive.

Tips for our own couples on their wedding day

Patrick and I loved every moment of our wedding but it really did go by quickly. All the cliches are true! Of course it’s important to make time for all your guests. But don’t forget each other. Go for a walk on your own (with us tagging along to take some photos!) and really make the most of it. We loved our couple shots. For some couples they are sometimes a little nervous about this time on a wedding day. But don’t think about it as a separate photo shoot. It’s just a part of the day that allows you to spend some time together. We forgot about our photographer and just enjoyed it. We love our couple photos together and you will do too!
