A DIY farm wedding in East Yorkshire always feels incredibly personal, and Sam and Rob’s day was exactly that. Held at Sam’s family farm, their wedding was completely built from the ground up, with friends and family helping transform the space into a beautiful setting to celebrate their marriage. For us as documentary photographers, a DIY farm wedding East Yorkshire style celebration like this is full of natural moments and genuine emotion.
Transforming a Family Farm for a DIY Wedding in East Yorkshire
We first met Sam and Rob on their pre-wedding shoot, where they told us they wanted entirely natural photography with no posing or staging. That was music to our ears. Our approach is all about capturing real interactions as they unfold, and a relaxed DIY farm wedding East Yorkshire celebration gives those moments space to happen naturally.
Sam and Rob had completely transformed the farm for their wedding. What had recently been a working barn was turned into a warm and welcoming reception space. Lights, decorations and handmade details filled the room, and the atmosphere felt incredibly personal. A DIY wedding allows couples to design every part of the day themselves, and their personalities were visible in every detail.
Bridal Preparations on the Family Farm
Sam got ready at the farmhouse, with her beautiful Charlie Brear dress hanging in the kitchen while bridesmaids and family gathered around her. The morning had such a calm and happy atmosphere, with smiles, laughter and a few emotional moments as gifts and cards were exchanged.
When Sam finally walked downstairs ready to leave, her dad’s reaction said everything. Moments like this are exactly why we love documentary wedding photography.
A Local Church Ceremony for This East Yorkshire Farm Wedding
The ceremony took place at a local church, with Rob arriving in the couple’s vintage VW camper van. Travel and camping are a big part of their lives together, so it felt like the perfect way for him to arrive.
Church ceremonies sometimes have restrictions on photography, and this one did too. We were only able to take a small number of images during the service, but the moments we captured still tell the story beautifully. The most important thing was seeing Sam and Rob together at the altar, smiling and clearly so happy to finally be getting married.
Award Winning Confetti Moments
After the ceremony, everyone gathered outside for confetti. The whole wedding party threw handfuls into the air, completely surrounding Sam and Rob as they walked through. The energy and joy in that moment made it unforgettable. One of the images from this confetti moment later received recognition from Masters Of Wedding Photography and then we also won a prestigious This is Reportage Award story award too. These wedding photography awards celebrate the best documentary wedding photography in the world.

A day like this reminds us why we love weddings built from the ground up. When couples create something so personal, the atmosphere becomes relaxed, genuine and full of real moments. That is exactly the kind of story we love to photograph.

A wedding surprise with a Childhood Companion
As a wonderful surprise, Sam’s family arranged for her horse, who had been part of her life since childhood, to meet her at the church. It was an incredibly emotional moment that really captured the joy and love of the day. After this, we headed back to the farm, stopping for a few photos in a nearby field. The setting was perfect for natural, documentary-style photography, allowing us to capture Sam and Rob in genuine, unposed moments.
A Celebration Full of Laughter, Love, and Sunshine
The farm reception was everything a DIY farm wedding East Yorkshire should be – relaxed, fun, and completely personal. Drinks flowed, guests laughed, and everyone celebrated in style. The food, expertly provided by Field and Forage, was exceptional, and the speeches struck the perfect balance of heartfelt emotion and humour. The autumn wind blew but the sun shone, giving guests the choice of enjoying the outdoors or the cosy comfort of the barn. Every moment was captured naturally, reflecting the spirit of the day.
Relaxed Couple Shots and Lively Evening Fun
We also captured a few relaxed couple shots, including a spontaneous moment where Rob lifted his bride, perfectly reflecting their personalities. The evening reception turned into a lively dance party, with confetti canons adding extra excitement. Our approach meant we could capture these moments without directing or posing, staying true to our documentary style. Ending the coverage with energetic, natural dance floor shots is always one of our favourite parts of a wedding day.
